If a minor low pressure is formed in the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea, it is habitual on the part of the CPI (M) to come forward with a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon. Perhaps it may be attributed to the climate change due to the capitalist and neo-liberal exploitative tendencies that caused the global warming. While giving his media briefs, Sitaram Yechury, party general secretary quite often reminds his media friends of the Marxist way of approaching each and every problem, that is, the concrete analysis of the concrete problems.

In Kerala, the CPI (M) leaders are increasingly getting involved in cases of goonda activities, gang rape, circulating pictures of genitals on the WhatsApp, land grabbing and the like. On November 4, the CPI (M) leadership was forced to place under suspension two of its local leaders making the tally of three in a week itself. The leaders under suspension are Sakkir Hussain, area secretary of Kalamassery, the industrial belt in Ernakulam, who is reported to be at large to avoid arrest on charges of abduction of a business man; Jayanthan, party councilor in Vadakkancheri  Municipal Council in Thrissur who is accused of  gang rape and Rajendran, local secretary, at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam for circulating the photos of his genitals on WhatsApp. Sakkir Hussain was zeroed in by the police following the arrest of other party local leaders in Kochi city on a complaint filed by a woman entrepreneur for extracting money from her abusing the name of the chief minister. They were said to have some good rapport with the senior leaders of the party from Kannur. Strangely all these developments took place in the backdrop of the resignation of E.P.Jayarajan, who was number two in the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry on account of showing nepotism.  That took to the son of another Central Committee member of the party and the Member of Parliament, P.K.Sreemathi.

Party spokespersons and leaders desperately defend the party on television channels that the resignation of E.P.Jayarajan testifies to the uncompromising stand of the party towards corruption. They also appeal that the party should not be viewed on the basis of criminal cases registered against some of its leaders as those are isolated incidents. All these incidents are very concrete in terms of criminality. It is up to Yechury as to how this situation should be put to concrete analysis. Are all these incidents isolated, or the manifestation of something deep within? If so, how? If not, what? Yechury is bound to share his concrete analysis of this situation the party is entangled in Kerala, the remaining lone solid bastion of his party nationally. He is also accountable as to how these criminals usurp leadership despite the CPI (M) being a cadre party rooted in democratic centralization.

It is true that the Communist Party played the pivotal role in shaping the destiny of Kerala by all means and benchmarking the behavior for all other political parties in the state .It still determines the state of affairs of the state, no matter whether they are at the helm of power or in the opposition. Now, Kerala society is fast acquiring a psyche of helplessness and hopelessness following the rampant nature of violence, criminality and corruption and open nexus between the politicians and criminals. Till a decade and a half ago, the Malayalees looked upon the leftist organizations particularly CPI (M) as a shield against those social evils and a corrective force. For the last decade and a half, the CPI (M) in Kerala was embroiled in factional fights mainly led by the former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan and the present chief minister Pinarayi  Vijayan; that too was part of power politics. Nevertheless, on some occasions it had borne the color of an ideological fight to a certain level. That factional fight provided a highly fertile environment to the rank and file of the party to go astray as patronage was available in either one of the camps. Now the period of factional fights are over and the culture it left started budging out in the form of criminality, violence and corruption. Gone are the days when the party held discipline and character above everything. Allegations of cartelism are raised against CPI (M) from many quarters.

The brutal murder of T.P.Chandrasekharan, rebel CPI(M) leader from northern Kerala had tarnished the image of the CPI (M) irreparably  in recent times as the involvement of party leaders were  established. CPI (M) cannot get rid of the responsibility of the unending murders in Kannur as well, in which the RSS is also equally accountable. These are the concrete realities in the state of Kerala. The CPI(M), as a party in general and its general secretary in particular, is bound to analyze the phenomenon of violence, criminality and corruption in its fold and explain the outcomes to the public and put in efforts to save the party from disaster. Otherwise, these symptoms would prove to be that of a terminal disease and the defenses raised are merely dirge.
