Will the ‘real’ culprits behind the attack on malayali actress be punished? Chances are slim. And real question is whether they will ever be apprehended in order to be punished. See some dots.

  • Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) feels that the investigation is on the right track.
  • Police says they have cast their net as widely as possible. Still, three absconding accused managed to find a lawyer to apply for anticipatory bail.
  • It is reported that the actress in her statement to the police had told that the incident is a “quotation” job, that is, the goons who attacked her are hired by somebody.
  • KB Ganesh Kumar, film actor-turned-politician, now an MLA and a former Minister of Cinema, says that he is very well aware of an underworld in Kochi which is involved in real estate sector and film industry. There is no underworld which doesn’t have a nexus with politics, or to be specific, influential politicians. This Kochi underworld can’t be an exception.
  • Minister of Culture AK Balan declares that whoever is behind this attack, even if it’s god, will be apprehended. Since Balan is an atheist, god mustn’t exist for him, and no one can apprehend someone who does not exist.

If you connect these, you can safely assume, and Balan may be giving us a clue, that those who are behind this attack is not going to be apprehended.

Now, let’s take a close look at the bail application. Reports indicate that Sunilkumar aka Pulsar Suni, who is the main accused, didn’t contact the lawyer directly. The lawyer has submitted Suni’s mobile phone as part of the bail application. If police didn’t know about this move of Suni, whom the victim identified during her ordeal and police started tracing as soon as the complaint was lodged, they have to hang their heads in shame. But, this is highly unlikely unless he is protected. Kerala Police nabbed a culprit within hours in a molestation incident in which a Meghalaya native was abused in train. And, this happened next day the actress attacked. But, this efficiency is not in display in this case. Moreover, there seems to be are certain efforts to limit the scope of the investigation. The comment by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, former Minister of Home and state secretary of ruling CPI (M), that this is a lonely incident is particular case in point. Though a special investigation team is formed, this statement effectively limits the scope of the incident, and thereby the investigation.

The bail application is suffice to say that this is planned not just between Suni and his accomplices. It is also learnt that some in the film industry is in talks with the victim. All pointers are now indicating that the case will be zeroed in to Suni and Suni alone. Only after this move will succeed, Kerala Police is going to ‘capture’ him. And once, he is ‘captured’, the film fraternity will clamor for his blood and put all the responsibility of the crime in him. The mob will definitely echo this. A dramatic incident at the court premises will make things sufficiently good for channel ratings. Some experts are already using the news-channel discussions ‘expertly’ to make a case that there is no conspiracy angle in this incident. They find the incident too immature for that.

This incident will make the resistance stronger, as observed by actor Mammootty, but only of that underworld. It seems that the behind-the-scenes operators of this case are getting successful and this will make their defense much stronger. The presence of an underworld in film industry is public now. And, it would not be surprising that this underworld, which will come out stronger from this ‘lonely incident’, starts dictating their terms publicly now onwards.
